Impacto da condição de saúde bucal no paciente com covid-19 internado em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva

Abstract

The oral cavity is home to the second most diverse microbiota in the human body, with bacteria, fungi, viruses and archaea. During the early stages of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the oropharynx is a crucial region for viral replication. Therefore, periodontal bacteria may be related to complications of covid-19. This study aimed to evaluate, in a population diagnosed with pre-obesity and obesity class I, whether the oral health condition of the patient with covid-19 who required intensive care care influenced the prognosis and mortality. A retrospective analytical observa-tional study was carried out in which the medical records of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital Regional da Asa Norte who had a diagnosis of covid-19 and pre-obesity or obesity grade I were analyzed. The results showed a greater need for mechanical ventilation in patients with odontogenic infection. Mortality was higher in the pre-obese group with odontogenic infection when compared to the group without infection. However, in the group with grade I obesity, we did not find the same result.
